Pertenece al Sistema Nacional de Investigadores en México, nivel 1. Es profesor investigador del Instituto de Investigaciones sobre Obesidad y de la Escuela de Gobierno y Transformación Pública del Tecnológico de Monterrey. Asimismo, es Director ejecutivo de Tómatelo a Pecho A.C., e investigador visitante Instituto de Estudios Avanzados para las Américas de la Universidad de Miami.
En 2005 fue galardonado con el primer lugar del premio de Investigación de la Global Development Network, en la categoría de Salud y Desarrollo Institucional por su trabajo "Preventing impoverishment, promoting equity and protecting households from financial crisis: Universal health insurance through institutional reform in Mexico".
Ha trabajado en el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, el Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública, el Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas y la Fundación Mexicana para la Salud (FUNSALUD).
